Frequently Asked Questions

Accessible toilets

What are the official requirements for an accessible bathroom?

The American with Disabilities Act (ADA) has set up a list of Guidelines to determine whether a restroom is accessible. Unfortunately, these guidelines and requirements do not apply to each user’s needs.

With the ADA Guidelines in mind, together with our customer feedback, we have made a selection of the most critical features (e.g., support/holding rails, turning circle, changing facilities) and have incorporated visual impressions (photos) in order to provide our users with enough information to determine if the listed toilet qualifies for their needs.

Adding a toilet

What should I take into account when reviewing an accessible bathroom?

When you click on ‘Add a loo,’ you will immediately see several icons representing various facilities to pay attention to. If the meaning of any of these icons is unclear, click on the ‘i’ information button (next to ‘select facilities’) for an explanation.

At accessaloo, we believe that pictures speak louder than words. They allow our users to decide for themselves if the listed toilet meets their individual needs. For this reason, we also ask that you also upload photos with every review. Make sure to take pictures of important details, such as the toilet entrance, transfer space, support rails, ramps, etc.

The rating of the loo is a subjective review and represents your personal opinion. You can also elaborate and share more details by writing in the description box.

What do the different icons stand for?

The different icons are used to provide general information about the available (or lacking) facilities. You can find the explanation for each of the various under the green “i” button (next to the facilities).

How does the star rating work?

In addition to outlining the facilities, uploading photos and writing a short review, users can submit an overall star rating. This star rating is based on a user’s personal opinion and experience – with five stars representing the highest quality, and one star representing the lowest quality. The number of stars displayed is an aggregate of the scores guests have given for that toilet. We strongly encourage our users to continuously review toilets to keep the information updated and correct.

Why does accessaloo need permission to access my mobile device’s camera and storage?

At accessaloo, we are convinced that images speak louder than words and that they are the decisive factor when choosing an accessible toilet. For this reason, we require our users to include photos when adding a new bathroom. To take pictures or upload them from your camera roll, accessaloo requires permission to access your mobile device’s camera and storage.

I do not want to give accessaloo permission to access my camera or storage. Can I still upload a new toilet review?

At accessaloo, we are convinced that images speak louder than words and that they are the decisive factor when choosing an accessible toilet. For this reason, we require our users to include photos when adding a new bathroom. Unfortunately, if you decline permission to access your device’s camera and storage, you will not be able to complete all the necessary steps to upload a new toilet.

If I add a loo, will accessaloo check if my review is correct?

accessaloo is a user-generated content application. This means that all the uploaded content is posted, reviewed and updated by app users. Once uploaded, the content is not revised by accessaloo, as we believe our app users will provide fellow app users with reliable information (and expect the same in return). Existing content can be reviewed through ratings and updated through additional photos and reviews. We strongly encourage our users to continuously review toilets to keep the information updated and correct.

How can I report abusive or inappropriate content?

At accessaloo, we rely on our users to report abusive or inappropriate content. The best way to report spam, offensive or inappropriate content is by reporting the toilet concerned. If you tap on the bathroom, a menu bar will appear on the right. This menu gives you the option to ‘report’ the loo, guiding you through several steps. Once you have completed the steps, our team at accessaloo will receive a notification. We will then check the content and delete anything we consider unsuitable. Reporting content is anonymous, meaning other users will not know who reported their review.

Can I add a loo without being connected to the Internet?

Yes. However, the upload cannot be completed without an Internet connection. This means that your toilet review will not be visible to other users until you reconnect to the Internet. Once you are connected again, the toilet will automatically be added to the database and visible to other users.

Adding or editing existing information

Can I upload new photos to existing toilets?

Yes. However, we suggest only adding pictures that build on existing information or update an earlier review when a toilet has been renovated.

Do earlier star ratings and photos get replaced, or is mine just added?

The star rating you see under the toilet information is an average of all ratings. The more, the better! Reviews and photos are added to previously uploaded user content. To keep the information updated and accurate, we encourage all our users to keep updating the toilets with ratings, reviews, and photos.

If I edit and update the facilities of a toilet, will this automatically be seen in the app?

Yes, the app always shows the most recently uploaded facilities.

Finding a toilet

Why is the map not showing accessible toilets near me?

If you cannot see an accessible toilet near you on the map, it means there have not been any reviews uploaded in your area.

accessaloo is a user-generated content application, meaning all the content is posted by app users. Because accessaloo is a brand new app, you might find areas with no toilet reviews. We encourage all our users (including you!) to add any accessible toilets you come across to our database.

What do the different icons stand for under an existing loo?

The different icons are used to provide general information about the toilet’s facilities. You can find an explanation for each of the various facilities under the green “i” button (next to the facilities).

Do I need to be connected to the Internet to find a toilet near me?

If you search the area around you for the first time, you will have to be connected to the Internet to access toilet reviews near you. If you have searched a particular area before, you can search the same area later and view all reviews without being connected to the Internet.
